What is Hell?

It's important to remember that God created heaven and hell, light and dark.  Therefore, He is master over it all.  (Isaiah 45:6-7)

Descriptions of hell (aka Sheol, aka "the abode of the dead"):

Exodus 10:21-23 (darkness used by God to help the Israelites escape Egyptian bondage.  It is typically accepted (and I'm looking for the verse) that God uses darkness to cover the wicked...for example, in the presence of sin, God is described as hiding his face and turning away)

Job 10:21-22

Luke 16:19-31 (parable told by Jesus to describe hell)

Psalm 116:3

Proverbs 15:11

Proverbs 27:20

Isaiah 5:13-15

Matthew 5:28-30 (The Lord Jesus Christ tells us it is better to do these things than to be put in hell)

Matthew 10:28 (Jesus tells us not to fear people, but rather to fear the one who can put you in hell...God)

Mark 9:42-48 (hell is a place where the fire is never quenched and the worms (maggots) don't die

2 Peter 2:3-9 (If God didn't spare the angels that rebelled with Satan, nor anyone but Noah and his family from the flood...why do you think he'll spare you???)

Revelation 6:8 (these things follow death and hell)

Revelation 20:13-15 (hell is a place people go, and it is a place of waiting until the final judgment...those people whose names are not written in Jesus' book of Life will be cast into the Lake of Fire, along with hell and death, after the final judgment)
